Description
The corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Jellicoe Avenue in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosebank is the start of Keyes Art Mile, one of the city’s newest art and design hubs. Currently there are three main buildings, although more developments are in the pipeline.
On the corner of the street is the distinctive oval-shaped Circa Gallery, an architectural landmark that was completed in 2009, and on the opposite side of the street is its sister gallery, Everard Read. Next to Circa Gallery is the immense Trumpet building, which was opened in mid-2016.
On the ground floor of the Trumpet building is a collection of art galleries and fashion and design stores, including Cape Town-based WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery, SMAC Gallery, hip limited-edition sneaker and streetware store Shelflife and South African luxury handbag label Missibaba. There’s also the colourful African-chic cafe-bar Milk Bar and burger spot BGR, both of which open out onto a pavement terrace.
On the second floor of Trumpet is the exclusive Mesh Club, a member’s-only club with a bar that opens to the public every evening. On the rooftop is star chef David Higgs’s exclusive restaurant and bar, Marble, an excellent place to impress high-flying friends or visitors with its live-fire grill and dramatic views of the surrounding area.
